'Doctor', nurse in trouble for aborting 6-months pregnancy

Taiwo Ogunlana, a middle-aged man who claimed to be a medical doctor trained at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital School of Nursing, and an auxiliary nurse, Kafayat Oyekola, have both been dragged to an Ebute Metta Magistrates' Court sitting in Lagos State, for illegally carrying out an abortion on one Kemi Awoniyi, who carrying a 6-six-month-old pregnancy.
Ogunlana, who told the court that he trained between 1979 and 1983, beofre working with the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, and moved into private practice as the proprietor of Amu Medical Clinic, located at No. 4, Church Street, Dalemo, narrated how the nurse brought the lady to his clinic in the evening of July 6, and begged him to carry out the abortion.
Ogunlana said the nurse told him that the lady had taken some drugs which resulted in abdominal pain for three days.
"When I checked her, I discovered that there was a foul odour emanating from her vagina and protrusion of the foetus which was already dead.
The lady was cleaned and taken to bed to relax before going home. I charged N25,000 for the treatment but she said that she would contact her boyfriend whom I have not met before.
This she did and the boyfriend said he would require my bank details to send money to me which he did not send up till now.
When Kemi said she wanted to go home, I warned her against it as she said she was feeling dizzy. I had to ask her to stay in the hospital, only to discover that she was pale. I immediately ordered that she receive two pints of blood."
Ogunlana added that the nurse had worked with him for six months as an intern and had brought many patients to him for abortion which he did successfully, adding that she got commission for any patient she brought.
On her part, Oyekola said she was only rendering assistance to Awoniyi due to her condition after taking drugs on her own.
The 'doctor' and his nurse both pleaded not guilty an the Magistrate, L.A Layeni, granted them bail in the sum of N100, 000, while the matter was adjourned till August 31.
