A fight over presents caused a man to be hospitalized and his young son to be arrested. The 39-year-old father of Cameron County, Texas, is recovering after he was shot in the eye by his son over a present, according Cameron County Sheriff Deputy Omar Lucio.
The incident began when the man’s 16-year-old son became angry over a gift he received from his father.
Authorities said that the 16-year-old boy was complaining that all he got was a fishing rod while all his friends received cars or pick up trucks as gifts from their parents.
During the argument, the father pulled out a baseball bat and hit the teen on the back of the head.
The man’s 14-year-old son intervened, and in an attempt to stop the altercation he went out to the family vehicle to retrieve a shotgun that was kept in the trunk.
The young 14-year-old boy discharged the weapon twice. The first time shot did not hit anyone, but the second bullet hit his father in the face and part of the shoulder. As a result, the father lost his sight in one eye, according to Officer Lucio.
The 14-year-old boy then drove away, but sheriff's deputies spotted him in an open field. The teenager was arrested and is facing charges, while his father is hospitalized.
So far, only the 14-year-old boy was arrested. He is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and evading arrest or detention with a motor vehicle.
Police are investigating the incident and the father may also face charges.
