Couple murder accountant over chicken roost

Tragedy: Couple murder accountant over chicken roostA man and his wife, Segun and Sola Irein, have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly beating an accountant, Idowu Solaja, to death following a disagreement over a chicken roost.

Punch reports that the incident happened at the residence where the Ireins stay with the deceased on Babs Lawal Street in the Ikorodu area of the state after the couple built the chicken roost.

It was gathered that Solaja, a chartered accountant whose house backed the roost, had complained to the couple that he was being disturbed by the chickens.
But instead of them to find a way to settle the issue amicably, they were said to have resorted to violence and attacked the victim, beating him till he lost consciousness.
The 51-year-old victim who was married with four children was said to have been later taken to a hospital by residents where he died shortly after admission just as the case was reported to the police.
An in-law to the deceased, Jimoh Ayandokun, said the Ireins were first rearing pigs, adding that after a series of complaints by the victim, they stopped the business and changed to rearing chickens.
“Idowu had complained several times about the smell of the pigs. It took nine months and the intervention of the landlord association before he stopped rearing the pigs.
After that matter was resolved, there was peace in the community and in December 2016, when the suspect’s wife had a party, the deceased even attended as they were neighbours.”
The deceased elder sister said Idowu had taken one of his children to school on the day of the incident when he saw some chickens being fed in the roost at Segun’s house.
“He went to the house and knocked at the door repeatedly, but nobody answered him. He banged harder and the man’s wife, Sola, came out and asked him what he wanted from them again.
Idowu insisted on speaking to her husband. The man came out and they started exchanging words.
Because the doorstep was elevated above the ground where Idowu stood, it was easier for Segun to grab Idowu by the neck.
In the ensuing scuffle, they both fell down. The wife picked a stone and hit Idowu in different parts of the body.”

Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Dolapo Badmos, said that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, for thorough investigation while the couple who are presently in detention, would be charged to court soon.
