The pig-sized beast turned on the toddler pinning her to the ground and biting and shaking her when the little girl was on a behind the scenes tour of the animals' enclosure. Her mother rushed to rescue her and was bitten twice, reports the Irish Mirror. The girl sustained deep cuts to her arm, four wounds to her abdomen, cuts to her forehead and multiple stomach lacerations She was rushed to Temple Street Hospital for surgery but recovered so well she was sent home after just seven days. The little girl suffered no infections from her horrifying ordeal despite being at high risk. In the report in the Irish Medical Journal, the medics state that a six week follow-up found that the girl was fully recovered and both her abdominal and forearm wounds were healing well. At Dublin District Court last month, Dublin Zoo was ordered to pay €5,000 to two children’s charities in relation to the August 8th 2013 attack. The zoo was ordered to pay the sums before December 8th when they are due to appear before the court again. After the incident, visitor contact with animals was topped. Tapirs , which originated in South America, are plant-eaters and rarely attack humans.
