Sale of frogs heighten in Nigeria with recession

Nigerians are infamous for their ingenuity in hard times and their superb ability to adapt, and this is no different.

With the state of the economy, many are turning to alternative means of livelihood and survival and that's where Frog business comes in.

 

Traders from  across Nigeria have been waiting in line for the chance to buy frogs at Dorawa Salau Kadawa, a village in Garun Mallam Local Government Area of Kano State, Premium Times reports.

According to the reports, the delicacy is being bought in large quantities to be taken back home.

Premium Times reports that most of the buyers even erected camps within the village, boosting the economy in the village and its environs.

Although the trade in frogs is not exactly a new line of business, it seems to have blossomed in recent times.

 

 

A frog dealer who identified herself as Sadikatu Ajiboye told Premium Times that she has been dealing in frogs for 15 years.

Mrs Ajiboye, 56, said that she was supplying kolanut up north to Kano when she realised that the frog business had a higher turnover in the south than any other item she took back.

She also disclosed that the trade earns her massive returns per week and that a small carton of frogs brought in as much as N5000, with a piece selling at N200.

Mrs Ajiboye added that she has become a distributor of the delicacy in the south-west, south-east and south-southA hunter of frogs in Dorawa Salau Kadawa village of Kano, Solomon Nwafor, who hails from Abia State, said that he wakes up early in the morning and sometimes late in the evening to hunt for frogs using hooks.

 

According to Mr Nwafor, he makes an average of N20,000 per week from sales of frogs.

He said, “Because of the understanding that exists between us, we the frog marketers and our Hausa (hosts), our business has kept growing by the day with more people coming to purchase. Some (patrons) even export to Asia."

Frogs referred to as jumping chicken in Asian countries has always been a delicacy in existence for years but is only beginning to gain popularity in Nigeria
