A teen died while undergoing a liposuction procedure she won at a beauty contest,

19-year-old Catherine Cando Cornejo was recently named the Queen of Duran, after winning the beauty contest.

She died on Saturday, during abdominal procedure.

According to a family spokesperson, Cornejo was taken into surgery at a clinic in Guayaquil around 8:15 a.m., to reduce the amount of fat on her stomach.

Around 6:00 p.m., her family was notified that she had died. The young beauty queen died of swelling of the brain, also known as cerebral edema.

Doctors hoped that the procedure would remove about one inch off her stomach. A spokesperson for the clinic however, said that the death was due to cardiac arrest.

If the surgeon is found guilty of medical malpractice, he faces up to three years in prison.
