5-year-old shoots, kills baby brother

"It takes a little bit out of you to find out that someone that you knew is now gone in such a tragic accident," said Mike Wiederholt, a family friend.
Kathy Armentrout said she saw some commotion at the home of her neighbor, Bill Porter. She knew his daughter and four grandchildren were in town visiting.
"I just noticed there was something going on, so I just went up and got the kids and brought them down here," Armentrout said.
Paramedics and deputies arrived at the house thinking they were supposed to treat a paint ball wound, but they quickly realized it was much worse.
Investigators said Porter's 5-year-old grandson found a .22 caliber Magnum revolver. The gun went off, hitting his 9-month-old brother in the head.
Medics flew the baby to Kansas City, but the boy died despite the doctor's best efforts. The shooting is under investigation, but Nodaway County Sheriff Darren White and his investigators said they believed it was a tragic accident.
The Nodaway County attorney will decide whether or to file charges.
"We are big supporters of firearms around here," White said. "We live in a rural area. We have a lot of people that own weapons. They hunt. They shoot. They do all of those things. Most people are very safe with them, and this is one of those cases where everything went together in the wrong way."
