A police chief in Georgia, is under investigation after he shot his wife.

The wife of Peachtree City Police Chief William McCollom was hospitalized and is in critical condition after being shot by her husband.

Police responded to the couple's home shortly after 4:15 a.m., where they found the victim, 58-year-old Margaret McCollom, with a gunshot wound. She was taken by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center.

The local police called the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to handle the case.

William McCollom called police and said that he accidentally shot his wife twice with his service weapon. After further investigation, it was determined that she was only struck by one bullet.

Investigators did not disclose where Margaret was injured, or what led to the shooting, but they did say that the shooting took place in the couple’s bedroom.

Peachtree City Manager Jim Pennington said that the police chief was placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

William McCollom has been in law enforcement for almost 30 years, and the chief in Peachtree City for over one year.

Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard said that charges could be filed against the police chief even if the shooting is ruled an accident.
