'I knew Macia was tied to van,' policeman confesses

Bongumusa Mdluli, 25, is the first officer to concede that he was aware that Macia was lying on the ground with his hands tied to a door of the van before it was driven off. He could not stop the van, he said, because members of the community were interfering with the arrest.
Mdluli said he tried to get the attention of the driver of the van but was unable to do so because of the noise at the taxi rank.
The three other officers to testify so far - Meshack Malele, 45, Thamsanqa Ngema, 35, and Percy Mnisi, 26 - have all said they thought Macia was in the van.
All the officers - including Linda Sololo, 56, Sipho Ngobeni, 30, Lungisa Ledwaba, 31, and Bongani Kolisa, 27 - have been charged with murder. They have all pleaded not guilty.
Macia's body was dragged behind the van for more than 200m. He had been arrested for allegedly violating traffic laws.
He died without receiving medical attention three hours after being detained.
