Man wearing miniskirts on the streets of Turkey |
Men throughout the country and in Azerbaijan, dressed in miniskirts to honor 20-year-old Ozgecan Aslan, who was burned to death after fighting off a sexual assault by a bus driver.
After Aslan’s burned body was found near a river, young men organized marches in her honor.
On Wednesday, a group of men in Azerbaijan, started the hashtag #ozgecanicinminietekgiy, which means wear a miniskirt for Ozgecan.
Since then, the hashtag became viral.
Women’s rights activists said that the recent miniskirt protest is proving very effective in raising the issue of violence against women.
The protests show that a short skirt is not an excuse for rape, one women’s rights activist said.
According to the police investigation, Aslan was the last passenger on a bus when the driver took her to a secluded area and tried to rape her.
Aslan fought with pepper spray and nail scratches were found on the attacker's face, Ahmet Suphi Altindoken.
Altindoken stabbed Aslan, and with the help of his father and a friend, they cut off her limbs before burning her and throwing her into the river.
