Wasila Tasi’u, a teenage girl who was accused of killing her 35-year-old husband, Umar Sani, with rat poison, has been discharged and acquitted by a Nigerian court.
The suit against Wasila was reluctantly withdrawn by prosecutors in May following pressure from activists and human rights organizations.
An official notice to that effect was sent to Judge Mohammed Yahaya of the Kano High Court sitting in Gezawa, leading him to strike out the case.
“I have no alternative than to pronounce according to law that the application of ‘nolle prosequi’ (unwilling to pursue) is hereby granted,” Yahaya said.
“In consequence, therefore, you, Wasila Tasi’u, are hereby discharged,” he added.
Wasila’s lawyer, Hussaina Aliyu, had earlier called for the case to be dismissed based on the fact that the prosecution had failed to establish her intent to kill Sani and exactly how he died.
The teenage girl ‘confessed’ to killing Sani, along with four others, because she was tired of being married.
