Madrid claim record 19th win

Christiano RonaldoReal Madrid set a new Spanish record of 19 straight victories as they beat Ludogorets 4-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday.
With top spot in Group B already sealed, Los Blancos could afford to rest a succession of their stars, including Iker Casillas, Marcelo, Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos, Pepe and Karim Benzema.
In their places came Keylor Navas, Fabio Coentrao, Alvaro Arbeloa, Nacho, Raphael Varane and Javier Hernandez.
Asier Illarramendi, meanwhile, continued in midfield, this time in James Rodriguez’s absence.
Having already matched Barcelona’s landmark streak of 18 during the 2005-06 season, Madrid knew that they needed to secure just one more win to surpass their arch-rivals. The best Ludogorets could hope for, on the other hand, was qualification for the Europa League knockouts after their failure to beat Liverpool a fortnight ago.
Cristiano Ronaldo sent out an early warning shot from 30 yards out, forcing Vladislav Stoyanov into a reflex stop.
Isco was next up, but again the goalkeeper came to the rescue, vetoing the Spaniard’s lob with crucial block.
Illarramendi’s passing ability was highlighted in the build-up to Isco’s chance, and he exhibited such vision again with fine work to feed Ronaldo, who took a touch before unleashing a pile driver towards goal.
However, Cosmin Moti was the right place at the right time with the deflection.
The Ludogorets were in no way out of sight, as three of their four attempts at goal were on target.
Virgil Misidjan’s effort was the pick of the bunch, as his curling strike from a rare counterattack was spectacularly punched away by Keylor Navas.
Nonetheless, Madrid eventually broke the deadlock, albeit with some luck.
Marcelinho was sent off for a deliberate handball to deny Varane on the line, despite Gareth Bale volleying home the rebound.
Up stepped Ronaldo from the penalty spot, sending the ball straight down the middle.
Toni Kroos and Bale may have spurned two more shooting opportunities to put daylight between themselves and the Bulgarian champions before the break, but the pair teamed up for the hosts’ second goal, the German’s corner being met by the No 11, who crashed in a header off the underside of the bar.
Madrid started the second half in similar fashion to the first, with Bale squandering another opportunity, as he latched onto Kroos’ inch-perfect through ball but failed to poke his finish beyond Stoyanov in close proximity of the Ludogorets’ goal.
However, Los Merengues were almost stunned when Diakov blasted a thunderous drive from some way out, requiring Navas to push the ball over the bar with a fingertip save.
From thereon, Madrid remained in cruise control.
Isco’s forward-thinking play on the edge of the box saw him lay the ball off to Chicharito on his left.
The Mexican, however, could only curl a close-range finish straight at Stoyanov.
Bale was unfortunate to not be awarded a penalty after a clear handball blocked his goal-bound header, but he was again found wanting when he fizzed a strike across goal. Ronaldo was then a split-second too late after he flung himself onto Welshman’s attempt.
With none of Madrid’s forwards firing on all cylinders, it took Arbeloa to put the result beyond doubt.
The full-back had headed a corner onto the bar, but he made no mistake about sweeping home Ronaldo’s flick-on from another set-piece minutes later.
The three points were well and truly in the bag with just seconds of normal time left on the clock, as substitute Alvaro Medran’s left-footed strike hit Anicet Abel and looped into the back of the net.

Drinking two fizzy drinks a day 'raises blood pressure': Chemical in the lining of cans puts heart patients at risk, scientists warn

Korean researchers found drinking from cans increased the concentration of BPA in urine by 1,600 per cent when compared to glass bottles. Drinking two cans a day increased blood pressure by 5 mmg Hg, a rise which would cause 'significant problems' for patients with high blood pressure or heart disease, doctors warned. Such patients would also need to seek medical if such a rise was seen, they added. Bisphenol A has already been linked to a host of medical problems, including migraines, obesity, diabetes, infertility, heart attacks and even cancer. The chemical has already been banned in baby bottles in Europe because of safety fears. However, the EFSA - the European Food Safety Authority - last year found that BPA posed no appreciable health risk to anyone apart from very young children. It is currently reviewing its findings, with a new report due before Christmas. The new study, carried out by the Korean researchers, found ingesting BPA was associated with high blood pressure and changes in heart rate. CHEMICALS USED TO MAKE CASH REGISTER RECEIPTS COULD RAISE THE RISK OF DIABETES, OBESITY AND CANCER Chemicals used to make till receipts could raise the risk of developing harmful diseases such as diabetes, obesity and even cancer, scientists claim. Alarming research suggests that a substance used to produce paper in store tills, credit card machines and ATMs could be absorbed into the blood stream. Researchers say the chemical bisphenol-A - widely known as BPA - can disrupt hormones, raising the risk of a wide number of health problems. The chemical has already been banned in baby bottles in Europe because of safety fears. But the transparent resin is still used to line most plastic and tin food packaging - despite the calls for an all-out ban by campaigners. . Dr Yun-Chul Hong, of the Seoul National University College of Medicine, said: 'A 5 mm Hg increase in systolic blood pressure by drinking two canned beverages may cause clinically significant problems, particularly in patients with heart disease or hypertension. 'A 20 mm Hg increase in systolic blood pressure doubles the risk of cardiovascular disease.' A person is normally said to have high blood pressure if the have a pressure of 140/90 mm Hg or above. The study involved 60 adults over the age of 60 who were given soy milk from glass bottles or cans three times over the course of the study. Researchers then measured the level of BPA in their urine, as well as their blood pressure and heart rate two hours after drinking each beverage. Soy was chosen as it doesn't contain any ingredients that are known to elevate blood pressure. They found that the concentration of BPA increased by up to 1,600 per cent after consuming canned drinks compared to after consuming the glass-bottled beverages. Researchers controlled factors such as population characteristics or past medical history. Time variables, such as daily temperatures, however, could still affect the results, they said. Dr Hong concluded: 'I suggest consumers try to eat fresh foods or glass bottle-contained foods rather than canned foods. 'Hopefully, manufacturers will develop and use healthy alternatives to BPA for the inner lining of can containers.' The study was published in the American Heart Association's journal Hypertension

Kidnap gang hacked off victim's finger and sent it to family to get £20,000 ransom

A gang who grabbed a man off the street at gunpoint and cut off his finger as part of a brutal ransom demand, has been found guilty of kidnapping. The three men were part of a 10-strong mob who pulled the victim off the street and demanded £60,000 from his frantic family to free him. Seven gang members had already admitted their involvement when they appeared at Leamington Justice Centre last month, but Ralph McLeod, Lewis Poyser and Yusuf Akbar all denied the charges. Today the three men were found guilty of blackmail, unlawful imprisonment and wounding after a four-week trial.

Nigeria is again in danger of another FIFA ban

Nigeria is again in danger of another FIFA ban should the country not adopt a common decision on the results of the recent NFF executive committee elections. FIFA could also be forced to sack the executive committee altogether and appoint a harmonisation committee in their place. Last week, the electoral appeals committee members upheld all the results of the September 30 elections in Warri, while the committee’s chairman has ordered fresh elections this week for the presidential, first vice-presidential as well as two other seats in the southeast and northwest. Both decisions are now before FIFA, who are expected to rule on the matter this week. But a top official exclusively told AfricanFootball.com it was in the best interest of the country that the two different rulings are harmonised before the FIFA intervention, which could lead to another court case and subsequent ban by FIFA of the country. “The matter is very clear – if the decisions of the appeals committee are not harmonised, FIFA will be forced to intervene and this may lead to court cases and subsequent ban of the country,” the official explained. “FIFA may also appoint a harmonisation committee in place of the executive committee and it is this harmonisation committee that will organise fresh elections.” The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have equally received both decisions from the appeals committee. “There are just too many interests and everyone is holding tight to his position and if the various differences are not resolved, what may result may not be good for some of these interests,” another source warned. A FIFA ban would mean the country will not feature in next year’s CAF U17, U20 and U23 qualifying championships, while the country’s clubs namely Kano Pillars, Enyimba, Warri Wolves and Dolphins will also be withdrawn from the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. Nigeria has been bedeviled by a lingering leadership crisis since the country crashed out of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil in July. This has led to a brief FIFA suspension and subsequently several warnings from the world football governing body.

Louis Van Gaal Issues Stern Warning To Falcao

Louis van Gaal insists Radamel Falcao is not fit enough to start for Manchester United and is “not interested” in whether he is unhappy at being benched.
Falcao who is currently on a season-long loan from Monaco, has made just three starts and four sub appearances in the Premier League.
Van Gaal said: “Falcao needs match fitness. He can only play for 20 minutes.
“I have selected him despite that but the rhythm of the game in the Premier League is the highest.
“It would be a better contribution if he played with the second team but I cannot do that because on Tuesday, Rooney was injured for the match against Stoke.
“I had to adapt to the needs of selection. I am not interested whether he is unhappy being on the bench. He has to follow my philosophy. I am here because of that.”

See the pill that will make your fart smell like chocolate

A 65yr old French inventor Christian Poincheval (pictured above) has created a sweet smelling pill that makes farts smell like chocolate.

The chocolate pill is a new addition to his other products which include pills that make farts smell like roses or violets and fart-reducing powder for pets.

According to him, necessity was the mother of this invention. He said he was was eating dinner with friends in 2006 when he realised the group had caused a gas attack at the restaurant.

"Our farts were so smelly after the copious meal, we nearly suffocated. The people at the table next to us were not happy. Something had to be done. When we were vegetarian we noticed that our gas smelt like vegetables, like the odour from a cow pat, but when we started eating meat, the smell of the flatulence became much disagreeable. We needed to invent something that made them smell nicer"
Poincheval claims his pills not only create chocolate-scented farts, they reduce intestinal gas and bloating because of ingredients like vegetable coal, fennel, seaweed, plant resin, bilberry and cacao zest. Lol.

Pele set to leave hospital

PELEPele is scheduled to leave hospital on Tuesday following his urinary tract infection.
The Brazil three-time World Cup winner, now 74, has been treated at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo since November 24, after being diagnosed with an infection that stemmed from an operation to remove kidney stones.
He has only one kidney, having had one removed towards the end of his playing career.
The former striker was in such good health and positive spirits on Friday that he posted a video on Facebook that showed him playing guitar and he has now been able to escape regular observation and move into his own room.
Now he will return home on Tuesday, after addressing the media at 1230 local time (1430GMT).
A statement from the hospital, signed by Doctors Fabio Nasri and Marcelo Costa Batista, reads: “Patient Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) continues clinical improvement without signs of infection.
“Considering his good recovery, his medical team has scheduled his leaving hospital tomorrow.”

NFF returns N510m World Cup money to govt

FIFA-NFFAmidst the stormy  weather in Nigerian football, the Amaju Pinnick-led Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, would score yet another goal in transparency and accountability today, when they return a whooping $3 million(N510 million) to Government.
The money is part of the appearance fee of the Super Eagles to the World Cup in Brazil which the Federal Government paid for the team to play their second round match of the World Cup against France.
The Eagles had boycotted training and threatened not to play the match against France if the allowance from the FIFA largesse was not paid. As at the World Cup, FIFA had not paid the money but the team held Nigeria to the jugular before President Goodluck Jonathan fell to their blackmail and, through Sports Minister Tammy Danagogo, sent the money in a chartered aircraft to Brazil to the team. Unfortunately, the team concentrated more in sharing the money than the match at hand. The sharing was on till 3 to 4 am on the same day they had a 5 pm match. They lost to France 2 – 0 at the Estardo Nacional in Brasilia to exit the World Cup. The players were so fatigued and paid the price.
That was the beginning of a new phase of crisis in Nigerian football.  There had been fears and speculations that when FIFA   finally pays the money, the $3 million released by Government might develop wings.
But Sports Vanguard gathered authoritatively that NFF would return the money to the Government in what many observers have termed a rare show of transparency and accountability. Secretary-General of the federation Musa Amadu said last week that the federation would return the money to the Federal Government. The board confirmed last night that this will be done this week.
The Pinnick-led Board had been weathering a lot of storm since after being elected in Warri.
One of their recent laudable efforts was sending 11 Nigerian elite referees to the Premier League in the UK to enhance their capacity and to be able to improve the lot of football on the Nigerian domestic scene. Vanguard

PENGASSAN threatens to shut down oil industry over PIB delay, anti-labour activities

NUPENGThe Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria says it has finalised plans to shut down all oil and gas installations in the country on the grounds of delay in the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill and anti-labour activities of some employers in the sector.
Some of the anti-labour activities the association listed in a statement made available to our correspondent on Sunday included retardation of staff promotion in the Petroleum Technology Development Fund; non-standardisation of nomenclature and collective bargaining agreement of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Agency with what obtained in other agencies in the oil and gas industry.
It also identified, “refusal of the management of Addax/Petrostuff Nigeria Limited and Chevron/Sudelletra to recall sacked workers; and Petrobras management non-procedural release of personnel and its refusal to renew expired collective agreement; the unjust termination of appointment of the Port Harcourt Zonal Secretary and Treasurer of PENGASSAN and Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers respectively; as other reasons.
It said some other issues as the perilous state of the nation’s strategic and industrial roads and highways, non-beneficial deductions of National Housing Fund from its members, pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft, and divestments by International Oil Companies without clear guidelines to check the resultant arbitrary job losses, heightening insecurity of members/families in the troubled parts of Northern Nigeria.
PENGASSAN also said plans were at the final stage with NUPENG to mobilise members for a nationwide industrial action.
It noted that the 14-day ultimatum given by its National Executive Council meeting of October 30, 2014 to the Federal Government and other concerned employers’ and agencies and further ratified by the Joint NEC of both NUPENG and PENGASSAN on October 31, 2014, had since expired without any meaningful resolution or commitment from either the government or the concerned employers’ and agencies at resolving the issues.
The statement hinted that all levels of the union had been fully sensitised and mobilised for the industrial action that would affect every value chain in the upstream, midstream and downstream of the oil and gas industry. Agency report

Housemaid abducts bosses’ two kids

A housemaid, identified simply as Juliet, has allegedly abducted the two children of her bosses who live on Gateway Crescent in the Magodo, Isheri area of Lagos State.
The 24-year-old housemaid was said to have fled home with the kids –Rafael (3), and 15-month-old Michael– who are nephews of a Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw, on Sunday evening after their parents went out around 6pm.
Our correspondent gathered that the kids’ mother, Mrs. Onajite Esharegharan, and her husband, Elvis, had decided to go for a shopping on the fateful day in celebration of the latter’s birthday.
It was learnt that the couple had instructed Juliet, who hails from Osun State, to lull the kids to sleep before they left home.
PUNCH Metro further learnt that Juliet, the children, their grandmother and her nurse ─ who also lives in the house ─ were in the sitting room watching television, when the generator went off. It was said that the elderly woman and the nurse decided to retire to their respective rooms, while Juliet went upstairs with the children.
It was when the couple came back home that the household discovered that the housemaid had sneaked out with the children.
It was gathered that Onajite secured the service of the fleeing housemaid last Tuesday through a sale portal, OLX, where a visitor, identified simply as Omolade, advertised .
Omolade had allegedly posted a number on the website for those who were interested in a “humble” housemaid to apply ─ an advertisement to which Onajite responded.   It was learnt that Omolade eventually took Juliet to Onajite’s office.
Our correspondent visited the couple at the Unity Estate, Ojodu, where Onajite’s aunt lives.
Onajite said, “After we came back from the church, the children looked tired and I told Juliet to take Michael to bed while I went to do my hair. He had not slept when I came back. That day (Sunday) was my husband’s birthday and we decided to have a couple’s outing. We told her to take the children to bed immediately because they were very tired.
“We got back home at 9pm. It was Abigail, the nurse, that opened the door for us. When we entered, everywhere was quiet and that was when my husband became suspicious because usually, our children would have run from upstairs to say welcome.
“She probably deceived the kids that she was taking them to their mum. Her telephone line and that of Omolade have been switched off since yesterday (Sunday). We lodged complaints at the Isheri Police Station and the Department of State Service. The police said it was beyond their capacity, but the DSS promised to track the housemaid down.”
Elvis, a businessman, said, “We just hope nothing is going to happen to them. We do not have any specific suspicion as to where she took them to.”
Onajite’s aunt, Mrs. Tina Obajuwana, said she was amazed by the housemaid’s action despite her calm look.
“When she was introduced to me on Saturday, I thought she would be a good woman. She looked gentle and hardly could anyone think she is evil,” she said.
In a post on a news portal, Nairaland, Henshaw urged members of the public to provide the family with information that could help in locating the children.
The post read in part, “Please help spread the news. My nephews (Rafael and Michael) have been missing since yesterday. These boys have been kidnapped! Lord locate them and bring them home safe and sound. Their parents left them at home briefly with the housemaid, grandmother and a nurse. The maid ran away with the children when the grandmother and the nurse went to bed. When the parents returned home, the children and maid were gone.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident, adding that efforts were on to rescue the victims.
He said, “There are efforts to rescue the children and apprehend the fleeing maid. Members of the public are encouraged to give information that will lead to the rescue of the kids and reunite them with their parents.”

British Base jumper killed in 90 metre cliff plunge in Sydney

A daredevil British Base jumper has plunged to his death from a cliff in Australia. Gareth Jones, 25, from Brighton, plunged 90 metres on to a rock platform in Manly, Sydney, during an early morning outing to watch a sunrise with friends. Police said witnesses told them a man climbed a fence and walked to the edge of the cliff to get a better view before slipping. He then fell and hit a rock platform below. Two of Mr Jones' friends climbed down to reach him but he could not be revived. The Foreign Office said it was ready to support the man's family An FCO spokesman said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in Manly, New South Wales on December 7. We are in touch with local authorities and stand ready to provide consular assistance to the family." Mr Jones had more than 500 jumps under his belt and made his name as a daredevil having leapt from landmarks including the Kuala Lumpur Tower. "What an epic adventure that was," the 25-year-old wrote on his Facebook page at the time after jumping 15 times from the landmark. A fellow extreme sports fanatic, who said he filmed Mr Jones when he base jumped from the Eiger in the Swiss Alps, paid tribute on his Facebook page. "Sad to announce that Gareth, who featured in my first Base video, passed away yesterday," Bouken Boy Media wrote. "A sport like that draws vibrant personalities, and he was an immensely fun and cheerful dude." Another wrote on Facebook: "Please be safe in everything you do my friends. Life is dangerous! Fly free brother G. it shouldn't end this way." A friend added: "We all gotta die but its what we do with our time that makes us heroes... In his own way Gareth was one of those! He didn't give a sh*t but he did give his all!"

First picture of five-year-old boy found dead with 'sickening and violent' injuries

Tragedy: Scott Chiriseri was found dead by police earlier today. His death has shocked the the local community

This is the first picture of the five-year-old boy found dead with 'sickening and violent' injuries.
Scott Chirashi’s body was discovered by police on Friday at his home in Alva, Clackmannanshire, Scotland having suffered “a significant injury”.
Mum Farai, 32, will appear in court on Monday in connection with his death.
Scott’s sister was also found in the house in the town’s Carnaughton Place, the Daily Record reports.
All day yesterday a stream of neighbours left flowers and soft toys outside the house in tribute to the tragic youngster.
Farai, originally from Zimbabwe, had lived in Alva for several years.
She moved to Carnaughton Place around six months ago with her family, including Scott’s father, named locally as Tichakunda.
Devastated neighbour Chigozie Ononiwu, a Nigerian IT worker, said Scott was in the same class as his son at Alva Primary School.

Nigeria seizes aircraft, weapons bound for Chad

Nigeria has seized an aircraft loaded with at least one military helicopter and heavy weapons bound for Chad that made an unscheduled landing at Kano airport, airport and security officials said Sunday.
Five Ukrainian crew members were detained, said Nigerian security agents, who insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press. The flight crew said the plane was flying from Bangui in Central African Republic to N'Djamena, the capital of Chad, said the security agents. Kano is far northwest of that air route.
The airport authority confirmed Sunday that a Russian-made Antonov transport plane was seized Saturday, apparently after it made an emergency landing because it was running out of fuel.
The plane carried one helicopter, according to PR Nigeria, a public relations company hired by the government. But security officers said the cargo included two helicopters, rocket launchers and machine-guns.
An "intense investigation is ongoing including using diplomatic means to unravel the mission of the aircraft, its origin and destination," PR Nigeria said.
Chad has thousands of troops in Bangui, as part of an African Union peacekeeping force.
Nigeria has had its own controversies about acquiring helicopter gunships to fight an Islamic uprising in the northeast. South Africa in September and October seized and froze some $15 million in cash and bank transfers with which officials intended to buy helicopters.

Tough life: Women who make a living crushing stones for N100 a day

Mustapha

Alirat Osunbayo is 54 years old. But under the blazing tropical sun at Quarry Road, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, she looks much older.
Her sweat-drenched slim and seemingly fragile frame, however, belies the physical strength she displays as she steadily chips away at the huge stump of rock before her, reducing it to small pebbles.
Osunbayo has been breaking huge rocks for almost 20 years. She is not alone in this rather strenuous way to eke out a living. She is one of the several women who struggle to earn their livelihood from cutting rocks into small stones at the quarry site located at the Abeokuta North Local Government area of the state. No man was seen breaking rocks in the different quarry sites our correspondent visited for three days.
As she spoke with our correspondent in a soft tone while massaging her chirped and blister covered palms, Osunbayo smiled ruefully and declared that that was the only thing she knew how to do to keep hunger away.
She said, “What else do you want me to do? With this job, at least, I’m sure of putting food on my table.”
Almost oblivious of the hot sun from which she took shelter under a small mat hung on a tripod; Osunbayo continued hitting her crude hammer on rocks cutting them into smaller pieces.
The ding-dong and hollow sounds of iron connecting with rocks emanating from the hordes of women bent laboriously over their tasks filled the dust infused air of the work site.
As the women constantly hemmed at the huge pieces of rocks, one could see pain and despair etched on their strong faces.

‘How American experts allowed growth of boko haram’

GOVERNMENTS and newspapers around the world attributed the horrific Christmas Day bombings of churches in Nigeria to “Boko Haram” — a shadowy group that is routinely described as an extremist Islamist organization based in the northeast corner of Nigeria.Indeed, since the May inauguration of President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the Niger Delta in the country’s south, Boko Haram has been blamed for virtually every outbreak of violence in Nigeria. But the news media and American policy makers are chasing an elusive and ill-defined threat; there is no proof that a well-organized, ideologically coherent terrorist group called Boko Haram even exists today. Evidence suggests instead that, while the original core of the group remains active, criminal gangs have adopted the name Boko Haram to claim responsibility for attacks when it suits them.Abubakar Shekau (C), the suspected leader of Nigerian Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, flanked by six armed and hooded fighters in an undisclosed place. The United States must not be drawn into a Nigerian “war on terror” — rhetorical or real — that would make us appear biased toward a Christian president. Getting involved in an escalating sectarian conflict that threatens the country’s unity could turn Nigerian Muslims against America without addressing any of the underlying problems that are fueling instability and sectarian strife in Nigeria. -
