Wole Soyinka Tells U.S To Stop Giving Excuses

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, asked the United States yesterday to stop giving excuses on why it would not supply arms to Nigeria.  Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, Soyinka, who stated that the country is in a war situation, said what Nigeria needs was not emergency relief materials, but support to win the war.
He said: “Please, United States of America, could you please, overlook the arithmetical deficiency of governance and stop giving an excuse to this government for failing to protect us.  We are trying to create, I hope a situation, where we do have conflict affected households. We do not need emergency relief supplies. We want to stop the displacement of  humanity etc.
“So, please, just say that will not supply arms to Nigeria and leave it at that. But don’t  say that instead you will send other things. That is not the issue at this critical moment for Nigeria.  We are fighting a legitimate, a just war,” he noted.
Wole SoyinkaThe Nobel Laureate also descended  heavily on the Inspector-General of Police, (IGP), Mr. Suleiman Abba, for the recent invasion of the National Assembly  by the police. He said the action was an unambiguous declaration of war against the people. According to him, the nation has seen Abba’s type in the past and know what became of public officers, who thought that they were more than the state.
Soyinka said members of the House of Representatives, who scaled the gates to enter into legislative chambers to perform their duties must be applauded and not derided. According to him, if anybody is to be ashamed, it should be the Inspector-General of Police for “his slavish adherence to conspiratorial, illegal, and unconstitutional instructions – to undermine a democratic structure, and one – to make matters worse – convoked in response  to an emergency of dire public concern.”
According to  him, President Goodluck Jonathan “continues to surprise us in ways that very few could have conjectured.  Peaking at his own personalized example where he set the law of simple arithmetic on its head – I refer to the split in the Governors’ Forum, and his ‘formal’ recognition of the minority will in a straightforward, peer election – democracy has been rendered meaningless where it should be most fervently exemplified. Nothing is more unworthy of leadership than to degrade a system by which one attains fulfillment, and this is what the nation has witnessed time and time again in various parts of the nation, the recent affront against the legislative chamber being only the most blatant and unconscionable.  We know of course that this is not the first of its kind in the nation’s history, but precedents are not binding. Each leader selects his or her own model for emulation or avoidance, and that choice is certain indication of the true nature of such a leader, and a clue to the kind of conduct that a people can expect of him.  It is a warning. His choices for the occupancy of crucial public positions – such as the protective arm of the nation – constitutes an even more immediate and constant public alert. The signals are ominous – for and beyond 2015.
The Nobel Laureate said that to state the obvious, “these, to state the obvious, are not ordinary times. The menace of Boko Haram hangs over the corporate entity called a nation and over every individual, citizen or mere bird of passage. The cliché ‘heating up the polity’ may grate the ear-drums with its banality but I think that we have a right to demand of a leader not to stoke up the furnace in which events have cast its citizens. Every day records a new violation of our humanity.
“The atrocious targeting of the great mosque of Kano has rendered any lingering doubt of impending national imposition an invitation for collective suicide, preferably through piecemeal dismemberment. The theories of cause and effect can wait, or continue – it does not matter – the omniscient in such matters continue to pontificate, some of them blithely forgetting that they indeed contributed to policies that landed us in this brutal cleft. What does matter is an awareness that the nation is only part of a global eruption of fundamentalist delusions whose staple diet consists of destabilization and dehumanization – all summed up as an ideology of hate for the different,” he noted.
Soyinka said, “the  line has been drawn. The people must decide – whether to submit or resist. We may be no-count plebians in the sight of the new-born patricians of Aso Rock and their apologists but – must we revert to the Abacharian status of glorified slaves? Of course, it is up to any people to decide.”

Like Human Being, Dog Gets Grand Burial in Lagos

DOG-BURIAL-700x336Last Saturday, November 29, Oshifila Street, Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos State, was agog, as a dead dog, a male Alsatian, popularly known as Dr. Papilo in its lifetime, was given a befitting burial by its owner. A day before the burial, a service of songs was held for the dog at Cannan Hotel, Ikeja.
At the burial, there was plenty to eat and drink, just as guests were thoroughly entertained by the Nigerian Army Band. A detachment of mobile policemen at the event also gave the deceased dog a seven-gun salute.
Many sympathisers and guests showered accolades on the dog, paying glowing tributes to the animal in the condolence register.
Dog-owners, military personnel, police officers, veterinary doctors and many others thronged the venue of the ceremony, which commenced at 11am that Saturday. Many passers-by abandoned their initial plans and made a detour to Oshifila Street to witness the unbelievable funeral.
The street and many parts of Ikeja, the capital of Lagos, came to a standstill for some hours. Many could not believe that it was a dog that was being buried. But the owner insisted that Papilo was more than a dog, describing the canine, as a special breed.
Immediately after its death, a condolence register was opened for the dog in front of Cannan Hotel, where Papilo has served, as a security guard for 10 years.
Some of the tributes in the condolence register read: Papilo, you were great, You will remain forever in our memory, We miss you Papilo, Sleep well, What a brave dog!
The owner of the dog, Prince Keneth Edet Ani, who serves with the Nigerian Army in Ikeja, told the reporter that his affection for his late dog was unconditional.
Papilo’s remains were interred in a four-feet grave and decorated with roses. The grave is beside the hotel where the dog served till its demise.
Ani described the dog, as his business partner, first child and a friend that travelled with him across the country. He said the dog was an intelligent soldier and a security expert that fought a good fight before its departure. He said he could not reward the dog enough for all it did for him in securing his business and protecting his family for years.

Nigerian Student Confesses To Killing Brother

One of the three Nigerian students who were reportedly attacked by armed robbers at their residence at Accra New Town, leading to the death of one, has confessed to staging the attack.
Mustapha Musa OsmaniMustapha Musa Osmani, 22, a student of the Sikkim Manipal University, near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, who broke down in front of a television camera and journalists, said when he did that he was under the influence of a drug.
“I was out of control. I do not know why I did that. I have never quarrelled with my brothers since we arrived in Ghana two years ago to further our education,” he said while sobbing.
Osmani had reported to the Kotobabi Police last Friday, November 28, 2014, that three masked men had attacked him and his two brothers, Nazifi Osmani Mohammed, 23, and Jamiru Osmani, 27, in their room in a compound house at Accra New Town.
He also told the police that they struggled with the masked men who had demanded the $4,000 meant for their registration fee at the Sikkims Manipal University, where they were pursuing a course in Information Technology (IT).
According to Osmani, his brothers were stabbed in the chest and stomach, while he was injured in the right hand.
Later, when some Good Samaritans took them to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Mohammed was pronounced dead and Jamiru was admitted, while he was treated and discharged.
Overdose
At a press briefing, Osmani pleaded for forgiveness from his family and friends.
The Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, told journalists that one of the Osmani brothers, Jamiru, told police investigators that he had been stabbed by his brother while he was sleeping at dawn last Friday.
He said when Osmani was questioned over his brother’s revelation, “he confessed to committing the offence and said he had taken an overdose of a medication”.
Mr Yohuno said Osmani claimed he had been taking some doses of Daizepam every day to enable him to stay awake and study for more than five hours, “but on Thursday night he took 20 tablets instead of two”.
Osmani, according to Mr Yohuno, also said he became hyperactive after taking the medication and “he took a knife and stabbed Jamiru in the chest in the living room and moved to the bedroom where Mohammed was sleeping and stabbed him in the stomach and chest”.
When Mohammed’s intestines gushed out, Mr Yohuno said, Osmani went back to the sitting room and when he found Jamiru still alive, “he asked Jamiru if he knew the person who had attacked him, but Jamiru said he didn’t”.
According to the police, the suspect subsequently raised an alarm that he and his brothers had been attacked by armed robbers.
Nigerian community
When asked about the wound on his left hand, Osmani claimed he had recovered shortly after stabbing his brothers and had attempted to take his own life, but Mohammed, before his death, had prevented him from doing so, which resulted in a struggle over the knife, resulting in the cut.
The police said Mohammed, who was wounded in the right and left chest, with some portion of his ear chopped off, was responding to treatment at the Hospital.
A provisional charge of murder and causing harm has been preferred against Osmani. A total sum of GH¢800 being part of the registration fee was retrieved from Osmani.
Later in an interview, the President of the Nigerian Community in Ghana, Mr Moses Owhara, who described the incident as unfortunate, said “it is a very disturbing incident which will tarnish the good name of the Nigerian community”.
He pledged the support of the Nigerian community in assisting the police in their investigations and urged all Nigerians resident in Ghana to be law-abiding

Pandemonium, as workers issue 21-day ultimatum to Chevron

Escravos — There was pandemonium, weekend, at the Chevron Escravos Terminal in Delta State, as the Escravos branch of the Seamen and Water Transport Workers Union, one of the wings of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, clashed with the management of Chevron Nigeria Ltd, during which the union gave a 21 day ultimatum to the company to fix an employment impasse involving it and the company or face a forceful shut down of its operations in the area. The union had through an earlier letter, said that the ultimatum was caused by what it described as “Chevron’s breach of the law through its resort to deal with a community group known as ‘Itsekiri Coastal Dwellers Association,’ as a modality to employ maritime workers,” which the union said, runs contrary to what the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria stipulates. The position of Escravos Maritime Workers Union on employment of maritime staff/seafarers in which the Joint Task Force, JTF Commandant, Warri, the Commanding Officer, JTF Escravos, the Department of State Security, Police Area Commander Warri, the Nigeria Navy and the Director of NIMASA, were copied, insisted that it was the exclusive preserve of its mother union, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, to recommend its members for employment in Chevron or any other oil company operating vessels in the country. The union, said “By passing our union’s stipulation is a slap on our face and the Federal Government of Nigeria, which established the enabling Act which gives the union its legal teeth. We are therefore, calling on Chevron Nigeria Ltd to retrace its step of compelling the union to work under the group. The group must be made to work under the union as a condition, henceforth, for peace to reign in the area.“We are giving Chevron a 21 day ultimatum to rectify the anomaly or we shall be forced to stop and shut down the operations of Chevron’s Escravos Terminal, just as we have been given the right to do so under the relevant law,” the letter added

US-based reggae star, Mandators, arrested over N16m fraud

Victor Eshiet
Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command on Saturday arrested United States of America-based reggae star, Victor Eshiet, over an alleged N16 million fraud.
Eshiet, better known as the Mandators, was picked up at the National Stadium, Surulere, on Saturday night, while he was having a reggae concert with other reggae artists in Nigeria.
A police source said that Eshiet was arrested based on a petition alleging that two years ago, Eshiet was given N16 million to buy some trucks from overseas by the petitioner.
According to the complainant, Eshiet bought and sent only one truck and since then had not returned to Nigeria.
The source added: “The suspect just came into Nigeria to put up a show, which he said was to revive reggae in Nigeria.
“The show was taking place on that Saturday when police went there to arrest him.
“Other reggae stars were there when he was whisked away.”
Eshiet was said to have begged the policemen to allow him conclude the show and he would come to the station himself.
He explained to them that he had pumped a lot of money into the show and also borrowed to make the show a success.
He said that not finishing the show means earning a lot of debt and also depriving reggae lovers who paid to come and watch the show.
After a long sojourn in the United States of America, Eshiet came to Nigeria with a reggae festival tagged: “Africa Meets Reggae.”
In attendance were top reggae stars like Orits Wiliki, Ras Kimono and Majek Fashek.
Fielding questions from the police, Eshiet had denied knowing the complainant, adding that his current trouble might be traced to a politician who wanted to destroy his show.
Confirming the arrest of Eshiet, Lagos State Police spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, said: “I can confirm to you that the reggae star, Victor Eshiet, the Mandators, was arrested.
“He was arrested in connection with a case of fraud.
“Investigation is still on going to know his culpability in the case.”

Father discharges boy attacked by dogs against medical advice

Master Omonigho Abraham, the four-year-old boy who sustained extensive injuries to his body and a life threatening avulsion injuries to his scalp following a vicious attack by two Alsatian dogs has been discharged by his father, Mr. Odia Abraham against medical advice.
The boy was discharged by his father on Friday from the Burns and Plastics unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) where he was receiving specialist care.
Master Omonigho Abraham the father
Master Omonigho Abraham the father
The boy was attacked by the dogs in their rented apartment at 35, Adegboyega Street, Akesan, Igando area of Lagos State on September 29.
Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, who made this known on Monday while reviewing report of the plastic surgery specialists in LASUTH who attended to Omonigho stated that the boy’s father took ill-advised step and chose to take his son out of the hands of the plastic surgery specialists in LASUTH on November 28, against medical advice after being thoroughly counselled that healthy granulation tissue growing on his son’s skull must not be interrupted.
He said all attempts to talk Abraham against taking this wrong step were rebuffed by the man who even signed necessary papers to show his desperation.
Idris noted that whilst conservative wound management was being done in the Burns and Plastic Ward, in LASUTH, the Lagos State Government set plans in motion to take Omonigho abroad for further management, where all expenses incurred would be covered by the state government adding that his parents were informed of every step of the process, and had close and continuous contact with the State Ministry of Health.
“After a thorough search, a suitable hospital was found that would care for the young boy. The chosen facility was the RAK Hospital, Dubai UAE. LASUTH established a communication channel with RAK Hospital and it was determined that Omonigho would require a meshed skin graft coverage of the exposed skull for the next phase of his management. The governor thus approved the funds for the management of Omonigho, which includes travelling, feeding and accommodation at the Rak Hospital in Dubai, UAE”, the Commissioner stated.
He pointed out that the boy’s father was promptly informed of the plan and was invited to the State Ministry of Health to discuss the details of the approval, travel plans and hospital arrangements, and was thereafter given a letter of approval stating the plans to fly his son abroad and was asked to provide his son’s passport with an accompanying family member in order to process visas and other travel requirements.
“However, Mr. Abraham informed us that a Non-Governmental Organisation from Delta State has made arrangements to fly him and his son for medical treatment at a hospital in India. He was counselled on the benefits of receiving the package offered by the Lagos State government and was also advised to put forward his decision as soon as possible so that the necessary arrangements can be made to transfer his son and a family member of his choice to Dubai for the treatment”, he said.
He added that the State government, in an effort to ensure the best care possible for Omonigho, also offered to support Abraham if he would rather go to India, in the hope that he would be getting the best care possible from the unnamed hospital in India, being sponsored by the NGO.
The Commissioner noted that Abraham however, for reasons best known to him, chose to take his son out of the hands of the plastic surgery specialists in LASUTH on Friday, against medical advice.
Said he, “the surgical team explained to Mr. Abraham that it was pertinent that the healthy granulation tissue growing on his son’s skull through the careful, thorough and expert care of the Plastic Surgery team must not be interrupted as this may cause infections to set in, and slow the healing process, as well as, delay any definitive reconstructive surgery. But Mr. Abraham unfortunately, took the ill-advised step to leave the facility after being thoroughly counselled by the specialist.”
However in a statement posted on the web page of Stella Dimoko Korkus, Little Omonigho Abraham was flown to India Friday night.
According to Dimoko Korkus, “Thank God Four Year old Omonigho Abraham and his mother departed Nigeria yesterday for India where he will undergo treatment to fix the damage done by the two dogs that attacked him and almost finished 50 percent flesh on his skull.
According to the statement, “Omonigho and his mother will spend the Christmas and New Year in India and will return after treatment is fully administered. They will be picked up from the airport and the bill for treatment, feeding and accommodation has been taken care of……May God see them through”, wrote Dimoko Korkus.
Omonigho’s father, Abraham Odia in a letter of appreciation sent by mail to Dimoko Korkus wrote: ‘’I want to appreciate the Almighty God for the privilege given to me to share this wonderful testimony. I am amazed and words cannot express my gratitude for the love and kindness shown to me during the unfortunate incident that happened to my son Omonigho.
“First and foremost, my gratitude goes to the following persons, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola, the Executive Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, The Deputy Governor of Lagos, Hon. Victoria Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, The coordinator of GIPLC, Mr. Nuhu Kwajafa, Dr. Dolopo Fasawe, Mr. Sola Kuti.
“Also, the management and staff LASUTH and host of others that if I mention their names, the space will not be enough.
“I thank everyone both home and abroad who sent money to me. What more can I say of Stella Dimoko Korkus this wonderful angel that God has given to mankind? God will continue to uphold you and give you more strength and meet you at the point of your needs.
“Yesterday, my boy was flown to India by Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan to undergo surgery/treatment on his head.
“Sir, God will protect you and your family and He will do for you what you cannot do for yourself. God bless you All. I am grateful’’.

13,000 quit church over gay marriage row

More than 13,000 people have left Finland’s Lutheran Church in three days in a row over gay marriage after an archbishop said he “rejoiced” that it could soon be legal.

Archbishop Kari Makinen said he “rejoiced from the bottom of his heart” on Friday at parliament’s vote approving a people’s petition that paves the way for a same-sex marriage law.
However, high-level Lutheran official Jukka Keskitalo said on Sunday the vote “doesn’t change (the church’s) idea of marriage,” which remains the union between a man and a woman.
The conflicting comments managed to enrage both conservative and liberal wings of the church in the last Nordic country where gay marriage is not legal.
From Friday to Sunday more than 13,000 people quit the church in protest, according to eroakirkosta.fi, a website set up to help people leave Finland’s state churches.
Quitting means they will be no longer pay church taxes, which are gathered for the Lutheran Church by the state.
“The archbishop’s message was destined for liberal members of the church, but it turned against the church itself,” said Petri Karisma, president of the League of Free Thinkers, which created the site.
Some 5,200 people left the church on Sunday alone, the largest number in a single day in four years.
About 4.1 million Finns, or 75 percent of the population, belong to the Lutheran Church, compared to over 90 percent in the 1970s.
Finland’s parliament voted on Friday in favour of same-sex marriage in a victory for campaigners who gathered thousands of signatures to force it to examine the issue.
The “citizens’ initiative” will not automatically result in legalising gay marriage but simply launches the process for parliament to examine the issue before a final vote.
Campaigners collected 166,851 signatures, more than three times the 50,000 required by Finnish law to force a vote in parliament.
Finland has recognised same-sex partnerships since 2002.
The new marriage law, if approved, is not expected to come into force before 2016

Man drinks TEN cans of Coke every day for a month – you'll never guess how much weight he piles on

This is the man who glugged his way through 10 cans of Coca-Cola a day – and piled on TWO STONE in just a month. Super-fit George Prior set himself the fizzy challenge to show the effects of the amount of sugar in the world's most popular drink. And in just 30 days, George, 50, was transformed from boasting a healthy and muscular physique to sporting a pot belly, love handles and moobs. As well as piling on the pounds, the married father-of-two feared he was becoming addicted to Coke after experiencing intense cravings George, who lives in Los Angeles, said: "I'm urging people to examine the amount of sugar in their diets. People need to be aware of the real and powerful damaging effects of sugar on their health. "The most dramatic change was in weight: 23 pounds of gain over 30 days. I also seemed to develop a craving for Cokes, or other sugars, during the time I was drinking Cokes. "My blood pressure went up, from 129/77 at the beginning to 145/96 at the end." George said he weighed 12 stone at the beginning of his health experiment at the end of October. By late November he tipped the scales at a porky 14 stone. During the month, George tried to stick to his normal healthy diet of meat and berries but said he found it hard to eat as much food because the Coke left him full at lunch and dinner times. The BBQ accessory entrepreneur said: "I did it to get people thinking and talking about how much sugar they eat and how unhealthy it is. "I would prefer not to do it again. I don't like being this heavy. "The actual drinking of the ten Cokes got to be an irritating chore every day. There were a lot of visits to the restroom, a feeling of constant fullness, and a clutter of cans everywhere." After George stopped drinking the fizzy soft drink he lost five pounds in four days. He added: "Kids shouldn't drink Cokes. But then kids shouldn't drink juices, either, and that's going to be a very hard sell to parents who believe that juice is 'natural' or even 'organic'. It's sugar, and not only do kids not need it, it's bad for them. "I think there are a lot of people suffering health problems like diabetes and heart disease, who aren't aware they could help themselves by just stopping sugar." He also blasted Coca-Cola for their marketing techniques. George said: "I'd like to see controls on the lobbying and spending of big corporations who sell sugar and don't want the government to tell people how bad it is."

'Let our child die' - Heartbroken couple who want two-year-old daughter to have life ended

The parents of four-year-old Zhao Zihan say their daughter is 'suffering all the time' and have begged officials to allow her life to be ended A heartbroken young couple whose four-year-old daughter is in agony with terminal cancer are begging authorities to allow her to die. Little Zhao Zihan was diagnosed two years ago with cancer in the retina of her eye. Since then her parents said her young life has been a nightmare of hospital visits and painful medical treatment. Despite having her left eye removed, the cancer remained in her body and she now has a massive and extremely painful growth on the side of her neck. Dad Zhao Lipeng, 27, said: "We can't bear to see her like this anymore. "She is suffering all the time, and we have taken her every hospital and every specialist that we could, and everyone has told us it incurable. There is no hope." The hospitals the youngster has been taken to include Beijing's Tongren Hospital, which specialises in Ophthalmology, were medics confirmed that the girl's condition was incurable and would be terminal. Mr Lipeng said that as a result of an incredibly painful and difficult process he and his 25-year-old wife Lili, from north-western China's Shaanxi Province, had decided they wanted to end her suffering instead of dragging it out, even though it would break their hearts. He said: "We want her to leave this life peacefully, not in agony." Euthanasia is illegal under current Chinese law, although recent surveys have shown that more than two-thirds of people in the country have a tolerant attitude towards the practice.

Final year student slips, drowns in well while fleeing from armed robbers

Final year student slips, drowns in well while fleeing from armed robbers // Font size: A final year student of Computer Science of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwasht-uku, at the weekend fell into a well and drowned while fleeing from armed robbers. The student, Victor Onyeka from Ndokwa West Council Area of the state was reported to have resumed for this year’s academic session only last week after spending last semester holiday with his parents in their community. According to eyewitness account, Victor was said to have visited his course mate who lives in another house within the metropolis on the day of the incident. “Around 8:00 pm, he asked his friend to accompany him to his house so that he could boil the soup he cooked in the morning of that day. “On their way, somewhere around the interior part of Agidiase quarters where most of the private hostels were located, a gang of robbers on a motorcycle accosted Victor, his friend and two other girls, whom they met on the way as they were going to the deceased house. They robbed the two girls and the deceased friend at gun point. It was at this time the deceased escaped and ran into a building close to the area”. Further findings revealed that his co-students traced the deceased to the area he ran into only to discover he had fallen into the well. “Despite the alarm that was raised by the students in their bid to save the dying youth, they could not save him. The owner of the well was equally handicapped as he could not make any effort to save the situation,” said another source
